Diversity and Inclusion

Growing Together in Kindness and Respect

At our afterschool program, we believe that every child and every staff member brings something special to our community. Just like a garden filled with different flowers, our space becomes more beautiful and joyful when people of all backgrounds, experiences, and identities are included and respected.

What is Diversity?

Diversity means that people are different from each
other in many ways — and that’s a good
thing! These differences can include:

Where we come from

Our beliefs and traditions

The color of our skin

Our families

The languages we speak

What we like and don’t like

The way we learn or move

Who we are on the inside

We want every child to feel proud of who they are and to
know that their story matters. We also want our team to model
respect for all differences and see diversity not as a challenge,
but as a strength.

What is Inclusion?

Inclusion means that everyone gets to feel safe,
seen, and welcome — not just sometimes, but
always. It means making sure that:

Every child has a voice

Everyone has a chance to participate

No one is left out because of who they are

Kindness is shown in both words and actions

Inclusion is about creating spaces where children belong —
not just because we allow them to be
here, but because we celebrate that they are here.

For Our Team

As educators and caregivers, it is our responsibility to build an environment where diversity is valued and inclusion is actively practiced. This means:

Listening to each child’s voice and showing them their ideas matter

Speaking up when we hear unkind or unfair language

Being aware of our own biases and learning from others

Choosing books, games, and materials that reflect a wide range of cultures, abilities, and identities

Supporting children in learning how to appreciate differences and be good friends to one another

We are not perfect, and we will make mistakes. What matters is that we stay open, curious, and committed to growing. When children see us doing this, they learn to do the same.

For Our Children

You are amazing just the way you are! Everyone in our
program is special, and our goal is to make sure you feel
happy, safe, and included. Here’s what you can do to help:

Be kind to kids who are different from you

Ask questions when you’re curious, and listen to the answers

Stand up for someone if they are being treated unfairly

Include others in games or activities, even if they’re new

Tell an adult if something doesn’t feel right

Being inclusive means being a good friend. It
means understanding that we can all learn
from each other, even if we’re not the same.

Together, We Make a
Difference

Diversity and inclusion aren’t just big words — they are ways of treating each other with love, respect, and fairness every day. By choosing kindness, by listening and learning from one another, we create a place where everyone can shine.

Let’s keep growing together — in friendship, in understanding, and in joy.
